BANGKOK, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Northern Thailand's Nan Province has been ravaged by tropical storm Bebinca on Thursday night, with residents from 11 villages forced to evacuate and one man electrocuted, reports said on Friday.

Torrential downpours triggered by Bebinca made some rivers rise to the critical level of 4.5 meters and streams burst the banks. The rain volumes in some districts were between 158-200 mm.

Floodwater reached about 50 cm deep in a school and was still rising, forcing suspension of classes.

A villager was electrocuted while moving belongings to high grounds from the rising water.

The Meteorological Department issued warnings on Thursday saying the storm would bring heavy downpours throughout the upper regions of Thailand and might trigger flash floods in some areas on Friday and Saturday.

Bebinca is forecast to make landfall in north Vietnam on Friday, before moving westward to northern Laos and weakening into a tropical depression Saturday.

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said they were prepared for the approaching storm and were confident that Bebinca's impact would be limited.

The Nan government has been on full alert for further floods and landslides.

Eight were killed after a mudslide triggered by heavy downpours struck a village in Nan Province in late July.
