SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- San Francisco Opera said Tuesday it has canceled a concert by renowned opera singer Placido Domingo for his alleged sexual misconduct.

The company said the decision to cancel the show previously scheduled for October this year came after recent media reports of multiple allegations of sexual harassment by the 78-year-old Spanish tenor.

Though the alleged incidents reported did not take place at San Francisco Opera, the company said it is unable to present the artist on stage.

"San Francisco Opera is committed to its strong anti-sexual harassment policy and requires all company members to adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct," it said.

Also on Tuesday, Los Angeles Opera (LA Opera) in South California, where Domingo has served as general director since 2003, announced it will hire outside counsel to investigate the allegations against Domingo.

The company hailed Domingo as "a dynamic creative force in the life of LA Opera and the artistic culture of Los Angeles for more than three decades."

"Nevertheless, we are committed to doing everything we can to foster a professional and collaborative environment where all our employees and artists feel equally comfortable, valued and respected," it added.

U.S. media reported Monday that eight singers and a dancer, as well as a half-dozen other women, accused the superstar of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behaviors that made them feel uncomfortable.

Domingo responded in a statement, saying the allegations are "deeply troubling, and as presented, inaccurate."
