FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, April 14 (Xinhua) -- At least two Afghan security force members and 10 militants were killed in fresh clashes in Afghanistan's northern province of Badakhshan overnight as fighting rages in the country, a military source said Sunday.

"The clashes erupted in the surrounding area of Jurm district after Taliban tried to overrun the district at midnight," Ghulam Hazrat Karimi, a press officer of the army's Division 20 Pamir, told Xinhua.

Three security forces and 10 militants were also wounded during the fighting lasting for hours in the mountainous district of the provincial capital Faizabad, the source added.

Fighting between government forces and Taliban fighters has gotten intense across the country since Friday when the militant group launched a yearly rebel offensive.

On Saturday, Taliban attacked Kunduz city, capital of neighboring Kunduz province, and the clashes on the outskirts of the city left five civilians, five security forces and 40 Taliban fighters killed and over 70 people injured.

The Taliban frequently starts the yearly offensive in spring as the season is locally branded as the fighting time of the year.
