HO CHI MINH CITY, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Between January and February, 2,822 traffic accidents occurred in Vietnam, killing 1,356 people, severely injuring 814 people and lightly hurting 1,355 others, the country's Traffic Police Department said on Sunday.

The numbers of traffic accidents, deaths and slight injuries caused by the accidents declined by 15.6 percent, 10 percent, and 22 percent respectively against the same period last year. However, the number of severe injuries rose by 4.4 percent.

In 2018, Vietnam witnessed 18,232 traffic accidents which killed 8,125 people, seriously injured 5,124 people and slightly wounded 9,070 others, posting year-on-year decline of 9.2 percent, 1.9 percent, 8.3 percent and 20.8 percent, respectively.

Surveillance cameras will be installed on a trial basis in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi capital by 2020 and nationwide by 2022 to monitor traffic violations, which will help to ease traffic jams and accidents, the department said.
