SYDNEY, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The latest superhero movie offering, Aquaman, made waves at its Australian premiere on the Gold Coast on Monday night, with charismatic star Jason Momoa wooing fans and media alike.

Directed by Australian James Wan, the movie was shot almost entirely in the state of Queensland where the premiere took place, which state leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said was the result of ongoing efforts to attract big budget movies to the region.

"Queensland has the breathtaking locations and adaptable infrastructure to host any Norse God or Sea King," Palaszczuk said.

"It's been a pleasure to welcome Jason back to our state to celebrate the release of what is destined to be the biggest movie of the summer."

Momoa revelled in the attention on the "blue carpet," taking the time for selfies and autographs with fans, and bringing a relaxed and down-to-earth approach to proceedings.

During the eight months of shooting, Momoa lived "like a local" on the Gold Coast, alongside 1,000 cast and crew who were employed for the production, as well as 700 extras who can now look to spot themselves in a Hollywood blockbuster.

So far the film has proved to be a big fish in an even bigger pond, grossing over 200 million U.S. dollars worldwide, largely thanks to a hugely successful early opening in China.
