SYDNEY, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- More than 800 students from 34 schools across New South Wales (NSW) State in Australia took to the stage at Sydney Town Hall for the 2018 Chinese Language Spectacular.

Held on the Monday evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the event was hosted in partnership by the University of NSW Confucius Institute and the Chinese Language Teachers Association of NSW.

Performing traditional Chinese language songs, dances, comedy sketches and poetry readings, children from both Chinese and non-Chinese backgrounds were given a chance to show off their Chinese language skills to over 200 distinguished guests from the education, business and political sectors.

According to Laurie Pearcey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) at the University of NSW Sydney, the Chinese language Spectacular aims to "build upon the success of previous shows and foster greater enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture amongst young people."

He said this year's Mid-Autumn Festival theme was inspired by the beauty and tradition behind this historically meaningful event.

When addressing the room in his opening remarks, Consul General of the Chinese consulate in Sydney Gu Xiaojie praised the efforts of everyone involved and said the show helped to "promote cultural exchanges between China and Australia and also to create a bridge between the youth of two countries."

"Their passion for learning Chinese language and culture will benefit NSW students in their future careers," he added.
