GAZA/RAMALLAH, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli army forces flared up in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Friday, leaving 22 Palestinians injured, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

Thirteen Palestinians were injured in the Gaza Strip and nine injured in the West Bank, the ministry said in an e-mailed press statement.

Dozens were treated in the field after inhaling tear gas, it added.

Clashes broke out following Friday's prayers upon the call of the Palestinian national and Islamic powers to make Friday a "day of rage" against U.S. President Donald Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Eyewitnesses said the fierce clashes between angry demonstrators and Israeli soldiers broke out in the north of the West Bank city of al-Bireh, where demonstrators threw stones at the soldiers, who fought back with tear gas, rubber bullets and live gunshots.

Similar clashes also broke out in several other West Bank towns and cities, where Israeli soldiers used tear gas, rubber bullets and live gunshots to disperse demonstrators.

In the Gaza Strip, the Islamic Hamas movement organized a demonstration, where hundreds of people took to the streets in protest of Trump's declaration and called for escalation of the fight against Israel.

Eyewitnesses said dozens of angry Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Israeli soldiers close to the border between eastern Gaza and Israel.

Earlier on Friday, Israeli air forces struck with missiles a target that belongs to militants in northern Gaza Strip, with no injuries reported, according to Palestinian security sources in Gaza.

The Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza was an immediate response to an earlier rocket attack on southern Israel. A rocket was fired from northern Gaza into southern Israel, causing no damages or injuries, according to Israel Radio. No one claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.
