Myanmar's Panglong peace conference adopts more basic principles

YANGON, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Union Peace Dialogue Joint Committee (UPDJC) has passed 14 more basic principles as the second part of a union accord for peace, the UPDJC secretariat said.

Of basic principles, four are in connection with political, one to economic, seven to social and two to land and environmental issues.

Basic principles of equality and non-secession from the union will be reviewed as a topic for the next conference, the secretariat said.

The ongoing Panglong Peace Conference, which kicked off in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday, focuses on the remaining points related to political, economic, social, security, and land and natural environment sectors, submitted by the UPDJC, for adoption to be included in a union agreement for peace.

The new principles adopted in the current third session will be added to the 37 basic principles agreed in the second session of the conference in May 2017, totalling 51 agreed points in the Union Accord.

The third meeting of Myanmar's 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference, aimed to unite with all ethnic nationalities and build a democratic federal union through dialogue.

The conference gathered representatives of the government, the parliament, the military, invited political parties, ethnic armed organizations and civil society.

Ten ethnic armed groups, which have signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Accord (NCA), and seven other non-signatory groups of the Northern Alliance attended the six-day meeting.?
